Light showers enliven Sunday in Ahmedabad
Amdavadis made the most of the rainy evening and thronged public places and major hangouts.
AHMEDABAD: On Sunday evening, the city received light to moderate showers in several areas. Amdavadis made the most of the rainy evening and thronged public places and major hangouts such as SG Road. On Saturday, the city had recorded 12mm of rainfall in municipal limits.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said that there is no major weather system over the region and thus there is no forecast of heavy rainfall anywhere in Gujarat for the next couple of days.
“However, almost all districts of Gujarat may experience light to moderate showers,” said a senior IMD official.
According to the State Emergency Operation Centre, Ghogha in Bhavnagar district recorded 21mm of rainfall till 8pm on Sunday, followed by Visavadar in Junagadh (20mm), and Chhota Udepur (14mm). Bavla in Ahmedabad district received 9mm, Detroj 5mm, and Viramgam 4mm.
Cumulatively, the state has so far received 88.38% of its seasonal rainfall. Except six, all 251 talukas have received more than 250mm average rainfall till August 18. In 49 talukas, the seasonal rainfall has been over 1000mm (39.3 inches). The good spells of rain have ensured a good sowing season across Gujarat, said experts. Several key reservoirs have got a fresh inflow of water.
“Of the 33 districts of Gujarat, Kutch, Chhota Udepur, Botad, Morbi, Bharuch, Narmada, Tapi, Surat, and Valsad have already received 100% of the seasonal rainfall thanks to the major spells in the first week of August due to a deep depression,” said a state revenue department official. “Sabarkantha, Panchmahal, Kheda, Anand, Surendranagar, Vadodara, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, Tapi, Navsari, and Dang have received 75-99% of rainfall.”
