AHMEDABAD: Today, gaze at the sky after the sundown and look southeastward. After the dark, you’ll be able to see the bright celestial object – the brightest in summer sky – which is none other than Jupiter, the biggest planet of the Solar System.
While Jupiter has been clearly visible on the sky for the past few days, Monday is special as it will be the brightest sight of Jupiter due to a phenomenon identified as opposition.
“A planet is at opposition when from the Earth’s point of view, it is directly opposite to the Sun, thus reflecting the maximum light and appearing brighter. On Monday.
It would rise along with sunset and would be practically visible the whole night. It would not be difficult to spot it as it will be the brightest object in the sky,” said Dr Narottam Sahoo, senior scientist at Science City.
He added that even with a small or medium telescope, one would be able to see Jupiter’s four big moons - Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, on both sides of the planet.
City-based scientists said that Jupiter comes to opposition every 13 months – the next such view would be possible in July 2020.
The planet is 11 times bigger than Earth and with 79 moons, it’s like a mini Solar System in itself. “We have organized an outreach programme about this fascinating planet in the afternoon and would organize a viewing by telescope in the evening for the students and citizens at Science City,” said Sahoo.
