Sabarmati turns black near Indira Bridge
AHMEDABAD: After the Kharicut Canal, it is now the Sabarmati river where chemical waste is being dumped suspect officials. On Friday, people visiting the riverbank found black and red water flowing in the river.
AMC officials said they didn’t realize before this that polluted water was flowing into the river and had formed a big pool. The incident occurred near Indira Bridge where there’s only a single rivulet.
The officials said that someone could have dumped industrial waste in the river.
It is worth recalling that according to Union ministry of environment, forest and climate change (MoEF) reply in Lok Sabha in January, Sabarmati is among Gujarat’s 20 most polluted rivers. Further, Gujarat ranks fourth among top five states with highly polluted rivers.
Environment experts believe that industrial effluents are the most common reason for pollution of Sabarmati river. They say industrial effluents are being released in big rivers including Sabarmati without being treated. “To make matters worse, the untreated sewage effluent is also being released in Sabarmati,” he said.
