AHMEDABAD: A controversy erupted at the government polytechnic in Ambawadi, after the principal directed students to wear shirts and shoes to college. The NSUI staged a protest at the polytechnic, demanding the withdrawal of the directive and threatening an agitation if the order is not withdrawn within 24 hours.
The principal, P M Patel, had called all first year students of the polytechnic for a meeting and apprised them of the rules and regulations of the college.
The principal told students that they would not be allowed to wear T-shirts and slippers to college, and were required to wear shirts and shoes.
When the student organisation NSUI was informed of the incident, its volunteers reached the college on Monday afternoon and staged a protest. NSUI activists contended that not all students are rich enough to afford shoes and shirts and there is no rule making the wearing of shirts and shoes compulsory in college. P M Patel said, “I have issued these instructions to ensure the safety of the students, as they work with chemicals, machines and electrical appliances. I have not made them compulsory.”
