Thakors attack Dalits at wedding in Gandhinagar
Ahmedabad: Two more incidents of caste conflict have occurred at villages in Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad districts. At Prantiya village in Gandhinagar district, Dalits were attacked by members of the Thakor community, who were allegedly riding motorcycles dangerously close to the venue of a wedding feast. In the second incident, at Bhankoda village in Ahmedabad district, Darbars (Rajput) stalled a Thakor man’s wedding procession.
About the Gandhinagar incident, Rajesh Parmar (25), a resident of the Dalit Ghetto in Prantiya, the Rohitvas, said their community members held a feast on Saturday evening, ahead of the wedding of his neighbour, Rahul Parmar, on Sunday.
About seven members of OBC Thakor community began riding their motorcycles at speed around the venue.
“When I told them to drive carefully, as there was a feast going on, one of them asked me how could I can tell him (a Thakor) to ride carefully. They then began abusing me and the others and after a while returned armed with sticks and iron rods and attacked us,” Parmar said in his FIR at Dabhoda police station.
Parmar and two others were injured in the attack. They then filed an FIR for the assault and under the Atrocities Act, against seven members of the Thakor community. At Bhankoda village in Detroj taluka of Ahmedabad district, eight members of the Darbar community, a so-called upper caste, were accused of assaulting and threatening Thakors who wanted to conduct a wedding procession on Saturday morning.
