Gujarat: Woman assaulted by husband for refusing to settle abroad

AHMEDABAD: A 22-year-old woman from the Shahibaug area of the city on Friday filed a complaint of domestic violence and assault against her husband, alleging that he had beaten recently because she refused to settle abroad with him.
The complainant stated in her FIR at Madhavpura police station that she married a resident of Chandlodia on March 3, 2018. Ever since their wedding, her husband has been pressuring her to take the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) exam so they could settle abroad.
“Ours was an arranged marriage and he did not know much about my educational qualifications.After the marriage, when he found that I had completed my electronics engineering, he started pressuring me to take the IELTS exam so so we could settle abroad,” she stated.
“As I did not want to go abroad and want to stay here, I always turned down his suggestion to take the IELTS test. This used to get him very angry and he even abused and assaulted often,” the complainant stated.
The woman also accused her husband of demanding Rs 15 lakh from her parents to start a new business after she did not acquiesce to his demand to settle abroad. Around a month ago, her husband pushed her out of their bedroom as she refused to ask her parents for money. She was made to leave the house and began staying at her parents’ house in Shahibaug.
When she was at her parents’ home, her husband called her and said that he would divorce her if she did not manage to bring Rs 15 lakh. He also threatened to kill her if she returned without the money, stated the FIR.
Madhavpura police registered a complaint of assault, criminal intimidation and violation of the Domestic Violence Act.
