BENGALURU: Terror reigned along the road to Kempegowda International Airport for 90 minutes in the early hours of Thursday as six machetewielding gangsters on two bikes attacked motorists, vendors and pedestrians and made away with their two-wheelers, cash and cellphones on a 4km stretch of the highway.
Police managed to arrest one of them a few hours later, shooting him in the leg after he swung a machete at them.
A manhunt is on for the rest.
The gangsters’ first victim was a call centre employee waiting for an office cab near Chikkajala Main Road, near Yelahanka, around 4am. The two bikes stopped near her. One of the gangsters snatched her mobile phone and they sped away.
Fifteen minutes later, the gangsters knocked on a parked cab’s doors near Chikkajala fort. The wary cabbie did not open the door, resisting even when one of them began swinging a machete.

The rider stopped on seeing the cops, took a U-turn and sped away. “Seeing him bolting, our men followed him and chased him for nearly a kilometre and blocked him. They tried to detain him but the biker pulled a machete and attacked the cops,” a police officer said. “We shot one round in the air, but he continued to attack us, we shot him in the left foot.”
The injured robber, Mohammed Ashraf Khan, a resident of RT Nagar, was shifted to Victoria hospital, police said.
