BENGALURU: Saturday night's heavy rain - accompanied by thunderstorm and squall - claimed the life of a 36-year-old painter in KHB Colony, Cox Town, besides knocking down 56 trees and 596 branches, damaging vehicles and plunging swathes of the city into darkness.
The storm returned with a vengeance on Sunday night, and the meteorological department predicted heavy rain for the next three days.

Around 10.30pm Saturday, a frond from a coconut palm in the compound of painter Satish A's house fell during the rain. Satish went out to move the frond, unaware that a snapped live wire was entangled with it. He was electrocuted.
The rain, thunderstorm, hailstorm and squally winds staged a violent return around 9pm Sunday. Eighteen trees were uprooted near Raj Bhavan, Rajajinagar, Jayamahal, Kengeri and Malleswaram. An advertisement hoarding crashed near Trumpet Intersection, affecting traffic.
There was a traffic jam on KIA road, Mehkri Circle, and ambulances blared as they couldn't move. KIA asked travellers to use alternative roads to reach the airport. Tree falls brought traffic movement to a halt on Sampige Road. Waterlogging of roads was reported from Basavanagudi.
As pockets of Ganganagar, Koramangala, Hanumanthnagar, RR Nagar, Indiranagar, HSR Layout, Shantinagar, Ashoknagar and Cox Town plunged into darkness, Bengalureans waited with bated breath for another stormy night.

Wind speed was 76kmph
Chief minister HD Kumaraswamy and his deputy G Parameshwara ordered BBMP officials to take up relief measures.
Saturday night rain was not heavy, but the wind and thunderstorm lent it a ferocious edge. Met department put the rainfall at 27.2mm. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre recorded 97.5mm at just one (Sampangiramnagar) of its 90 stations across the city. Elsewhere in the city, the rainfall was in 2mm-30mm range.
The department said the winds blowing from the east touched a speed of 76 kmph at 8.58pm Saturday and the winds from the north logged 52kmph around 9pm at HAL airport. The brunt was faced by Vijayanagar where every second street had an uprooted trees.
