BHOPAL: As an homage to her late son Devashish Sharma, an Army doctor who was killed on duty, city's famous ceramic artist Nirmala Sharma organized a ceramic pottery exhibition cum sale to raise money for the families of martyrs on occasion of Armed Forces Flag Day on Friday.
Sharma has been organizing the exhibition since 2006 in memory of her son.
Speaking to TOI, Sharma said, "Devashish was serving as a doctor, giving first-aid to the injured during Operation Rakshak in Dongargadh, Kashmir in 1994.
His commandant was shot and he went to pull out the bullet from his body. But a terrorist who had not been killed, shot Devashish from the back, rupturing the aorta in the thigh. Though he was bleeding profusely, he managed to kill the terrorist."
She added, "He had understood that his end was near and when the rescue helicopters arrived, he sent the civilians and soldiers to the hospital first saying he will go in the next batch. Unfortunately he could not make it and passed away on the way to the hospital." He was then felicitated with the Kirti Chakra, Sharma said.
