BHOPAL: A gang of goons allegedly fired bullets at an engineering student in TT Nagar, while he and his four friends were on their way home.
The youth was returning after attending a birthday party with his friends and were riding on two bikes.
The accused attacked the group with rods, injuring them, said police.
Both the victim and the accused have past criminal records and the incident is said to be a fallout of a rivalry.
TT Nagar police registered an attempt to murder case against the accused and started investigations.
Investigation officer SI Neeraj Kumar said, the complainant, 21-year-old Sudhir Dehariya, a resident of Bijasan Nagar in Kotra Sultanabad, is a student of BE second year.
He told police that he and his four friends had gone to a birthday party at a restaurant in Jawahar Chowk. They were returning home around 12:20am. He and his friend Durga Prasad Sharma were on one bike and the other friends were following them.
At Shastri Nagar, the five accused - Umesh Bamnere, Amar Bamnere, Golu Rathore alias Ticket, Ajay Pawar and Neelu - waylaid them.

Umesh fired a shot at the complainant and the bullet got lodged in his wrist. Sudhir lost control and fell from his bike. After this, the accused attacked them with rods. The other friends fled even as the accused thrashed his friend Durga Prasad on the head, he said in his complaint.
Durga Prasad has sustained severe head injuries.
Locals informed police and rushed the two to hospital. SHO Sanjeev Chouksey said that police nabbed Amar and Ajay after the incident while three others were on the run. He said the incident could be a fallout of an old rivalry between Umesh and Sudhir. Umesh was released from jail in an Arms Act case only seven days ago.
In another incident, a 17-year-old boy stabbed one Sanjay Mahale multiple times, after a dispute with Mahale's nephew at Panchsheel Nagar on Monday night. TT Nagar police registered an attempt to murder case against the minor boy and started investigations.
