BHOPAL: A man barged into a DSP’s home and shot him dead in front of his family members on Wednesday, leaving the police parivaar shocked. The killing was the fallout of a personal dispute, say cops.
The alleged shooter, Himanshu Pratap Singh, a resident of Nehru Nagar Police Lines, had gone to DSP G L Ahirwal’s house armed with a pistol. He was earlier arrested for posing as a CID officer to extort tuck drivers.
Ahirwal, 60, was shot in the chest and died within minutes of being wheeled into hospital.
DIG Irshad Wali said Ahirwal was posted with CID at police HQ for more than three years. His wife is no more and he lived with son Santosh Choudhary, a homoeopath, and daughter-in-law Rakhi Choudhary in Awadhpuri. He had undergone heart surgery last month and his daughter, Dr Anita, was visiting him.
Choudhary told TOI that he was at his clinic when his wife called up at 7.29pm to say that someone named Himanshu had come to visit DSP Ahirwal. “I had met Himanshu at a wedding some time ago but did not knew him well,” he said.
Himanshu had allegedly told the family that he wanted to meet the DSP to wish him a quick recovery. Ahirwal was lying in a sofa in the drawing room and Rakhi and Anita were inside when they heard a heated exchange between the visitor and Ahirwal. Anita stepped in and asked Himanshu not to argue with her father because he was not well. She asked him to leave immediately. Himanshu stood up, and acted as if he was leaving. Suddenly, he pulled out a pistol and shot the DSP in the chest at point-blank range, says the family.

Himanshu ran away even as Anita and Rakhi rushed to save Ahirwal. With the help of neighbours, they took him to hospital in Arera Colony but he died a couple of minutes later.
IG Jaideep Prasad said Himanshu’s mother Archana Singh is a head constable and posted with cyber cell. She got a job on compassionate grounds after her husband’s death. The incident is the fallout of some family-related dispute, said Prasad, adding that police teams are out looking for Himanshu.
DSP Ahirwal was SHO of Nishatpura and Ashoka Garden police stations and had served as SI in Bag Sewania and Piplani police stations. Himanshu has a crime record, say police. Around five years ago, he was arrested by Hanumanganj police for allegedly posing as a CID officer to loot truck drivers. The reason for the dispute between Ahirwal and Himanshu is not yet clear, say police. Senior officers from police HQ and city police are investigating the case.
