BHOPAL: In one of the quickest-ever investigations in Madhya Pradesh, police chargesheeted the accused in the Bhopal child rape-murder on Wednesday — within 48 hours of his arrest. In court, the accused — 32-year-old Vishnu Prasad Bamore — stood stone-faced before the judge, confessed to his crime and pleaded to be hanged.
CM Kamal Nath has promised the victim’s family that the accused would be chargesheeted within 48 hours and the trial completed in a month.

Racing against the deadline, Kamala Nagar police filed a 108-page chargesheet against Prasad in the special POCSO court of ADJ Kumudni Patel on Wednesday. The prosecution listed 40 witnesses and forensic and crime-scene evidence. The case will be sent for registration on Thursday and once the trial court is decided, charges may be framed the same day. Since the Bhopal Bar Association has told the court that no advocate will defend Prasad, the court may appoint a legal aid counsel.
Prasad was brought to court under heavy security around 4pm, with ASP zone-I Akhil Patel, three city SPs, three SHOs and armed police personnel cordoning off the area. Prosecution counsel Sudha Bhadouria presented the chargesheet and forensic report. DNA report will be submitted during trial, she said.
During the hearing, Prasad betrayed no emotion. ADJ Kumudni Patel asked him why he committed such a heinous offence. “I was under the influence of alcohol and it just happened. I admit to it. Hang me,” Prasad said, in a flat voice. The judge asked him if he wants to appoint a private lawyer. Prosecution counsel Sudha Bhadouria stepped up to inform the judge that on Tuesday, when Prasad was produced before the court of special judge Suresh Singh, vice-president of Bhopal Bar Association Reena Verma appeared before the court and said that no advocate would appear in court to defend him.
“You stand so calmly before the court and have no feeling of regret on your face at all,” the judge noted. Prasad stood stone-faced, and said nothing. The hearing was adjourned and Prasad sent back to jail, where he is on suicide watch.
Since the district judge court is closed for summer vacation, the case will be presented before special judge Suresh Singh’s court who will refer it to the trial court. Charges are likely to be framed against Prasad on Thursday, said Bhadouria.
