BHOPAL: Taps in many parts of the city relying on Upper Lake water supply continued to run dry on Thursday. The situation has been compounded owing to lack of coordination between various departments of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC).
In Karond, angry residents gathered at Housing Board intersection and protested against the erratic water supply in many areas on Thursday.
The protesters were led by BMC ward No. 77 corporator Mubarika Dawoodi, as people shouted slogans against the administration and the Bhopal mayor.
Traffic jam in the area was thrown out of gear for about one and a half hours. Police intervention was required and BMC officials rushed to the spot to give assurances. After the assurances, the protesters ended the protest.
Many areas in Ward No. 77 and 78, water supply has been affected for almost two months. Many areas have not received regular water supply for almost a week. Otherwise too water pressure is low, said Dawoodi.
BMC assistant engineer Balwinder Singh Ahluwalia, reached the spot and clarified that the BMC is trying to ensure water supply and in some cases it is compelled to resort to water rationing. People urged the civic body to press more water tankers in service, which BMC officials agreed on.
Other people in the protests cited that for several days, BMC additional commissioner of water works, chief engineer in charge, were avoiding phone calls and water supply situation has not been resolved.
In affected areas around Karond, at least 10 more water tankers are required. Protesters were joined by a number of residents from nearby areas including BMC ward No. 23.
