Bhopal: Man drives 450km to kidnap Kolar teen, stabs her grandfather and uncle
Shubham Sabkar
BHOPAL: In a chilling reminder of the 12-hour hostage crisis of July 2018, a 22-year-old man drove all the way from Buldhana in Maharashtra to Bhopal — a distance of 450km — on Tuesday to abduct a 16-year-old girl he claims to be in love with. He stabbed her grandfather and maternal uncle, and assaulted her grandmother when they tried to save the teenager.
The quick response of a Dial 100 team prevented it from getting worse.
The accused, Shubham Sabkar, is in police custody, where he has so far refused to say anything apart from threatening to commit suicide. He had slit his wrists after the failed attempt to kidnap the schoolgirl, but was saved by police.
It brought back memories of the crazed stalker from Mumbai, Rohit Singh, who barged into a former model’s home in Bhopal in July 2018, stabbed her in the neck and stonewalled police for 12 hours as she lay bleeding. It was sheer luck that she survived. He is still behind bars.
While Singh had taken a train to Bhopal, Shubham drove 12 hours with a friend from Buldhana in Amravati district and showed up at the girl’s doorstep in Kolar on Tuesday. She was taken unawares when Shubham barged in, around 3.30pm, and started dragging her out. Hearing her screams, her grandfather came running and tried to grapple with him. Shubham allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed him twice. As the elderly collapsed, his wife — the teen’s grandmother — stepped up although she is frail and ailing.
Shubham allegedly pushed her to the floor and kept dragging the girl out. By sheer luck, her maternal uncle arrived and gave him a fight. In the scuffle, the girl broke free and ran back into the house. Enraged, Shubham stabbed him as well, and again lunged for the 16-year-old.
By then, neighbours had come out and rushed to her aid. Someone had already dialled 100 and a patrol team responded within minutes. Seeing himself outnumbered, Shubham cut his left wrist. Duty officer ASI Asharam Marskole pounced on him and wrestled the knife from him.
Police took him and the two men he had stabbed to hospital. SHO Kolar Anil Bajpai said that the man who had driven Shubham to Bhopal sped away on seeing the police. Patrol teams are out looking for him.
The 16-year-old has told police that she only knew Shubham as a friend of her brother, and no more. Police have booked Shubham for abduction and assault with a knife.
