Monsoon bliss: With 120mm, Bhopal records season's heaviest rainfall

Monsoon has made a grand comeback in the state with Bhopal recording its heaviest rainfall of the season in the past 24 hours. The city recorded 120.9 mm rain between 8.30 am on Saturday and 8.30 am on Sunday. Earlier on July 6, the city had recorded 118.2 mm rainfall.

BHOPAL: Monsoon has made a grand comeback in the state with Bhopal recording its heaviest rainfall of the season in the past 24 hours. The city recorded 120.9 mm rain between 8.30 am on Saturday and 8.30 am on Sunday. Earlier on July 6, the city had recorded 118.2 mm rainfall.
Showers for the past two days rain have made the city rain surplus by 17 per cent.
In the monsoon season so far, the city has recorded 497.4 mm rain while normal till date is 423.4 mm. The seasonal average rainfall measured from June 1 to September 30 is 1090 mm. It means the city has received close to half of the total seasonal rainfall till date.

However, overall MP is still rain deficit by 7 per cent. The state has recorded 372.4 mm rain till Sunday morning, while the normal till date is 399.8 mm. But the multiple systems active over the state are expected to cover the deficit. Officials of the meteorological department, Bhopal circle, said there is upper air cycer over northwest Bay of Bengal that would convert into low pressure area in the next three days and intensity the showers.
Moreover, there is upper air cyclonic circulation over North West Rajasthan and adjoining Rajasthan. Monsoon trough is also passing over MP and there is another cycer over North West MP. The systems are expected to give heavy showers in the state till first week of August.
Widespread rainfall was witnessed in other parts of the state as well. Among places that recorded heavy showers in the past 24 hours were Shajapur (177 mm), Hoshangabad (106.2 mm), Betul (61.6 mm), Pachmarhi (44.0 mm) and Raisen recorded 43.0 mm showers. From morning to evening on Sunday, Pachmarhi recorded 32 mm rain, Hoshangabad 25 mm, Indore 26.2 mm, Khandwa 22 mm and Malajkhand recorded 18.0 mm rain.

Downpour brought down the day temperatures sharply. The day temperature in Bhopal on Sunday was recorded at 24.8 degrees Celsius, four degrees less than normal mark, while night temperature in the city was 22.6 degrees, which was at the normal mark.
Variation between the day and night temperature was just two degrees Celsius. The wind direction in the city was westerly with average wind speed of 25 kilometers per hour. A day earlier, maximum and minimum temperature of Bhopal were respectively 27.1 degrees and 23.8 degrees Celsius.
In the forecast for Bhopal on Monday, Met officials said that there would be cloudy sky with possibility of rain and one or two spells may be heavy. The day and night temperature would be 25 degrees and 22 degrees Celsius respectively, while average wind speed will be 22 kmph.
In the forecast for state, the Met department issued warning of heavy showers at places like Katni, Mandla, Jabalpur, Anuppur, Vidisha, Sagar, Damoh, Chhindwara, Balaghat, Seoni, Hoshangabad, Betul, Harda, Guna, Shajapur, Raisen, Sehore, Rajgarh, Alirajpur and Ashok Nagar districts.
