SUV rams into handcart at Kaliyasot Dam killing an elderly couple

BHOPAL: In a suspected drunk driving case, a speeding SUV rammed into a handcart killing an elderly couple on the spot on Thursday morning in front of Excellence College at Kaliyasot Dam area in Bhopal.
The incident took place around 5:30 AM in front of Excellence College at Kaliyasot Dam area in Bhopal.
The deceased Hazarilal Mehra, 50, and his wife Vimla Mehra, 45, resided at Ishwar Nagar, behind Excellence College.They ran a tea and instant noodles stall at Valmi Parisar at Kaliyasot Dam.
Son of deceased couple, Deepak told TOI,that in the morning as usual his parents were taking the handcart to Kaliyasot Dam. He, too, was taking his brother Sonu's handcart and was behind them. It was dark when his parents reached in front of Excellence College. At the same time a speeding SUV coming from Kaliyasot Dam side rammed the handcart knocking both of them down. The impact of collision was so severe that the front portion of the SUV flung to the other side of the road. The driver of the vehicle tried to flee the spot after the accident but somehow he lost control over the wheels and the SUV fell into a pit.
Deepak told TOI that there were two boys and a girl in the SUV and they seemed drunk. The accused ran away from the spot without even caring to look for his parents. He said that the girl forgot to take her mobile phone which he picked up and later handed over to police.
Deepak said that he called the 108 emergency ambulance but it did not arrive so he himself rushed back home and brought his car by which he carried his parents to a nearby private hospital where they were declared brought dead.
Deepak said that the SUV is brand new and it's light was switched off at the time of incident. The music system was playing at full volume. He said driver of the killer vehicle could not spot his parents and handcart and rammed into it.
