BHOPAL: The video of a tiger killing a cow beside Satna-Panna highway went viral on Wednesday. "Arre pagle chhod de," a villager is heard saying on the video, as the tiger glowers at the crowd and drags away the still kicking prey.
Passerby spotted the tiger and its kill just a few feet from the road, around 10km from Panna district headquarters. Within minutes a crowd gathered to gawk.
Women and children can be heard laughing and talking excitedly on the video - just two leaps away from the tiger, who looked irritated by their presence.
After tolerating the crowd for some time, the tiger pulled its prey deeper into the forest. Witnesses later said that as soon as this tiger moved away after having his fill, another tiger moved in to scavenge the leftover carcass.
These tigers were seen in the buffer zone of Panna Reserve and about 4km from the Hinota entry gate. A rescue team from the reserve arrived on elephants and drove the tigers back into the forest.
Once a 'zero tiger' reserve, Panna has exceeded its carrying capacity over the years due to conservation efforts of the forest department. Though state-wise data of All India Tiger Estimation Report 2018 has not been shared with states yet, officials believe the population is more than expected.
