Hockey legend Dilip Tirkey to head OTDC

BHUBANESWAR: Hockey legend and former BJD Rajya Sabha member Dilip Tirkey has been appointed as chairman of the Odisha Tourism Development Corporation (OTDC). Chief minister Naveen Patnaik on Friday cleared a proposal regarding appointment of Tirkey.
According to sources, Naveen’s choice to rope in Trikey as the OTDC chairman is to promote Odisha Tourism in national and international forums ahead of the men’s hockey world cup scheduled in November-December, this year.
“Dilip Tirkey is an international figure and former captain of the Indian hockey team. Odisha is going to host the world cup hockey which will be attended by 16 countries. Besides successfully organizing the game, the state government is also looking towards promotion of its tourism potential as over 10,000 foreigners are expected to visit the state during the event. So, Tirkey’s appointment is a perfect choice,” said a senior state government official.
The OTDC position was lying vacant ever since Narendra Swain elected to the Rajya Sabha in November, 2015. Recently, the OTDC had paid dividend of Rs 1 crore to the state government for the first time since its inception in 1979. The state government PSU presently operating 20 hotel units (Panthanivas facilities) and has the largest air condition tourist transport fleet in Odisha.
Tenure of Tirkey as Rajya Sabha member ended in April, 2012. He did not respond to repeated calls for a reaction on the issue.
