BHUBANESWAR/BALANGIR: The engine of a coal-laden goods train on Friday travelled more than 100 metres leaving the wagons behind in Balangir district. The incident happened at around 5.40pm between Sikir station and Titlagarh station.
The East Coast Railway (ECoR) sources said the incident occurred after the Visakhapatnam-bound train left Sikir station. The engine with a wagon attached with it left other wagons behind and moved forward.
As soon as the train driver came to know about it, he connected the wagons and left for Titlagarh.
“In such cases, normally the train driver comes to know about the incident immediately as there is a fall in pressure indication in the engine. It is not an unusual thing,” said an official statement of the ECoR.
On April 7 this year, 22 coaches of the 18406 Ahmedabad-Puri Express (via Sambalpur) with around 1,000 passengers on board travelled for 13km from Titlagarh to Kesinga station without any engine in Titlagarh-Rayagada railway section. The railways had suspended seven of its employees for the incident.
Another incident happened in Balangir district on Friday. Engine of Puri-Ajmer superfast train went out of power in the middle of the Deogaon and Saintala station. The train, which had left Balangir station at 8am, was detained for at least one hour until another engine of a goods train brought from Saintala to pull it to Titilagarh.
