Odisha: NIT-R installs 13 rooftop solar units

To promote renewable energy, rooftop solar units were inaugurated on 13 buildings at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, by chief executive officer of Rourkela Steel Plant Deepak Chattraj on Monday.

ROURKELA: To promote renewable energy, rooftop solar units were inaugurated on 13 buildings at the National Institute of Technology, Rourkela, by chief executive officer of Rourkela Steel Plant Deepak Chattraj on Monday.
Power generation is expected to start after a month and the institute targets to produce 200 units every day. "NIT-Rourkela has executed a power purchase agreement with M/S Azure Power Rooftop Private Limited for installation and operation of the solar photovoltaic power plant," said director of the institute Prof.
Animesh Biswas.
"This solar units will provide us power for 25 years at a price much lower than our present procurement price from the grid without any capital expenditure on our head," he said.
"Besides, we will get clean and noiseless power and will be able to make significant savings on account of diesel cost on our diesel generator sets," Biswas added.
Appreciating the inititaive, Chattraj said, "Solar power is environment-friendly and I am happy to inaugurate such a project. Senior professor Bidyadhar Subudhi, who is chairman of the solar power generation project, informed that the streetlights of NIT have been linked and will operate on solar power from Monday.
