CUTTACK: An undertrial prisoner was allegedly killed by a murder convict in Choudwar Circle Jail around 9.15 am on Monday.
The deceased has been identified as Ramesh Pradhan, 45, of Matha Sahi, Tulasipur. Police sources said Ramesh was attacked by Jaladhar Samal, 35, from Jagatsinghpur after a heated exchange of words between them while they were working in the jail garden.

Samal attacked Ramesh with a hoe and he sustained several injuries. Jail authorities rescued Ramesh and took him to SCB Medical College and Hospital, where the doctor declared him brought dead. Ramesh’s family members found deep wounds on his neck and injuries on several parts of his body.
Ramesh’s mother has alleged that her son was killed by another prisoner on the jail premises and jail authorities were also involved in it. Ramesh was arrested in a murder case in 2011. “The body of the deceased has been sent for postmortem. A case has been registered in Choudwar police station and we are looking into the matter. Investigation is on,” said IIC of Choudwar police station Padmanav Pradhan. The incident took place in the jail garden. Jail superintendent R N Swain said, “Action will be taken against security personnel in case of any lacunae.”
