5 markets child labour-free in Chandigarh: Traders' body president

Domestic child labour is tougher to handle than child labour in markets. This was highlighted in a roundtable conference organized on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour at the UT Guest House, Sector 6, by Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) on Tuesday.

CHANDIGARH: Domestic child labour is tougher to handle than child labour in markets. This was highlighted in a roundtable conference organized on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour at the UT Guest House, Sector 6, by Chandigarh Commission for Protection of Child Rights (CCPCR) on Tuesday.
Harjinder Kaur, chairperson, CCPCR, shared that some markets have been made child labour-free but it is not enough.
"We have to work with more zeal and in a coordinated manner to tackle the social issue," she said. She stressed to make the stakeholders accountable to get the result in a time-bound manner and commission will take the issue with the Chandigarh administration at all levels.
Sangita Vardhan, chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, gave the keynote address, elaborating the social causes of child labour. She further said that prevention is more important than rescue and stressed on coordination among different stakeholders.
Varun Beniwal, assistant labour commissioner, labour department, assured full support of his department. Inspector Sukhdeep Singh, anti-human trafficking unit (AHTU), Chandigarh, suggested a unit comprising officials from all related departments be set up for prompt action. He further suggested a special vehicle be arranged with a team for child rescue immediately.
Anil Vohra, president, Chandigarh Beopar Mandal (CBM), stated that they have been successful in making five markets child labour free and promised to make four more markets soon.
Kamaljit Singh Panchi, president, Chandigarh Traders Association (CTA), highlighted the existence of domestic child labour, which more tough to handle than child labour in markets. Baljinder Singh Bittu, President, Federation of Sectors Welfare Associations of Chandigarh (FOSWAC), Chandigarh suggested the need to rescue the roadside beggars with periodic operations.
Mahavir Singh, member secretary, State Legal Services Authority, sensitized the participants of provisions of the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2016. He further stressed the moral responsibility of civil society and the legal responsibilities of government agencies. He suggested designating a nodal officer from each department for effective implementation of the provisions of the Act.
