CHANDIGARH: Punjab Police have cracked almost seven-month-old blind murder case of a Muktsar-based merchant who was shot dead in March with the arrest of four members of the Devinder Bambiha gang.
Organised crime control unit (OCCU) IG Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh said on Monday that the motive behind the murder was car-jacking as the criminals wanted to snatch the Maruti Swift Dzire car of the victim, 52-year-old Gurdev Singh.

The .32 bore pistol used in the crime and the missing car had also also been recovered from the accused, the IG added. Gurdev, who used to deal in coal and timber business, was shot dead on March 11, in the broad daylight in Muktsar. The case was registered at police station city Muktsar but since local police failed to make any headway it was soon handed over to the OCCU team, headed by AIG Sandeep Goel.
The OCCU team found clues of Bambiha gang's involvement in the murder. One gang member Ajay Faridkotia was questioned by the team and confessed to the crime. He named Amna Jaito, Amritpal Baba, Rakesh Kaku and Komaljit Singh alias Komal as co-accused. The IG said Faridkotia was arrested recently in Moga for his involvement in around two dozen cases of serious nature. On July 30, OCCU arrested 11 men, including Jaito, of the Devinder Bambiha gang with 17 weapons. Later, Jaito was brought on production warrant in Muktsar case. The IG added after the OCCU team connected the missing links, Baba of Muktsar and Kaku of Bathinda were also arrested for their roles in this case.
