CHANDIGARH/GURUGRAM: Haryana Congress chief Kumari Selja and leader of opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Sunday attacked Manohar Lal Khattar-led BJP government, accusing it of pushing Faridabad and Gurugram into backwardness.
Addressing the party workers in a series of meetings in the two cities on Sunday, they gave credit of setting up and development of National Capital Region (NCR) districts to the Congress.
"The first Prime Minister laid the foundation of development in the NCR. He built Faridabad district. Successive Congress governments have been working for the growth of twin cities. But last five years have proved to be a nightmare for all," said Selja.
The former Union minister said, "The garbage dump in Badhwari is higher than Aravalis. In front of Aravalis, it looks like mighty Mount Everest." She said while coming to Gurugram from Faridabad, she was shocked to see the mounds of untreated garbage. "This is what BJP has turned Gurugram into," she said.
She said the BJP government was destroying Aravalis instead of taking steps to check rising pollution levels. "And it is being done to benefit a few people without taking into account the serious implications."
During Congress regime, Gurugram witnessed a lot of infrastructure development. "Now, there are huge incomplete residential buildings with no one living in them and the people who invested in these buildings have lost crores of rupees," said Selja.
The BJP government talks of development, but the flyovers they constructed have developed cracks and craters.
Former Haryana chief minister Hooda said, "It was only due to financial growth and contribution of Gurugram and Faridabad that Haryana became number one in all aspects. BJP has pushed the state towards bankruptcy. This is time to wake up and weed out BJP from Haryana," he added.

Hooda said during the Congress rule, Gurugram topped in development and now it was topping in pollution and unemployment. "Faulty policies of the BJP-led state government have hit Gurugram industries like Maruti and Hero. The production has gone down, lakhs of people are losing jobs," he said addressing the party workers in Kaman Sarai.
He also targeted the BJP governments at the Centre and in Haryana over the amended Motor Vehicles Act. Giving an example where a hefty challan was imposed on a motorcyclist in Gurugram for violations, Hooda said under the amended act, hefty challans were being issued, which were burdening the common people. "A bike is worth Rs 15,000, but a challan is issued for Rs 15,000," he said, promising to reduce the fines if voted back to power.
In an obvious reference to infighting which prevailed in the state unit earlier, he said there may be some differences of opinion among Congress colleagues, but all were united to oust the Khattar government.
Congress campaign committee head Captain Ajay Yadav said the party would strengthen its booth-level management in Gurugram and Badshapur.
"The response of workers' meeting us is excellent and the party is hopeful of coming back to power," the former minister added.
