Car set on fire, man sleeping in it suffers 50% burns, critical
Chandigarh: A 40-year-old man was battling for life at the PGIMER here on Monday, after the car in which he was sleeping in was set on fire by a group of people who were yet to be identified.
The SHO of Manimajra police station, Karam Chand, said the injured, Irfan alias Musa, suffered 50% burns in the incident. “The Maruti Zen was in a bad condition and was parked near Samadhi Gate in Manimajra on Saturday night when the incident took place.
We have registered a case and started investigations. No arrests have been made,” he said.
The SHO said they got information about the incident around 10.30pm. As DSP east Satish Kumar reached the spot along with a police team and the SHO, a fire engine was also rushed to douse the flames. By the time the fire was extinguished, Musa had fallen unconscious in the car. A resident of Manimajra, Jai Singh, is the owner of the car. He told the police that he had been parking the car on the spot for two years and was now planning to sell it to a scrap dealer.
Police said Musa was homeless and had been living in the Maruti Zen for more than a year. Jai Singh was aware of it. Musa worked as a labourer in the area. A blanket and other household items were also found in the car. Police said Musa could not see anybody setting the car on fire, as he was sleeping when it was set aflame.
