CBI catches Chandigarh cop taking Rs 2,000 bribe

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a head constable for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a former bank employee in Sector 34 in its fifth arrest of a policeman for corruption this year.

CHANDIGARH: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday arrested a head constable for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 2,000 from a former bank employee in Sector 34 in its fifth arrest of a policeman for corruption this year.
Dalbir Singh was deputed in the proclaimed offender and summoning staff of the Chandigarh Police.
Sources in the CBI said Harbhajan Singh, a resident of Kharar, Mohali, had lodged a complaint that Dalbir was demanding a bribe of Rs 2,000 to not take action against him in a cheque bounce case pending in a court.
Recently, the court had issued a notice against Harbhajan under Section 82 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC).
Dalbir contacted Harbhajan and allegedly demanded the bribe for not arresting him and demanded the amount on the next court hearing.
Harbhajan approached the CBI, lodging a formal complaint. CBI sleuths recorded conversations between the accused and Harbhajan. The accused called Harbhajan to Sector 34 to hand over the money. After finalizing the time, the CBI laid a trap around 1 pm on Tuesday.
As the accused accepted the money from Harbhajan, CBI sleuths caught him red-handed. Later, searches were conducted on the premises of the accused at Morinda, Ropar and in Sector 41.

In the evening, Dalbir Singh was brought to the CBI office in Sector 30. He would be produced in a CBI court on Wednesday and his remand sought to investigate of other policemen were involved in the case or not.
