CHANDIGARH: Water scarcity has taken its toll on the residents of Sector 21. Complaints of inadequate supply remain unanswered.
On the first and second floors especially, the suffering is acute since April. The water supplied to those families is at a very low pressure and insufficient in quantity, due to which only the underground tanks of the ground-floor residents are possible to be filled.
The rest of the families have to depend on water tankers.

During a visit to the area, residents told TOI how they have to book tankers to meet their routine requirement of water. People who live on the upper floors are tired fetching buckets of water from the ground floor. There was erratic water supply for the past two months, but the problem was solved briefly when a complaint was lodged with the municipal commissioner. But that relief was for three to four days only.
Confronted on the issue, area councillor Asha Jaswal said: “I had taken up issue with MC officials in the house meeting. They said low pressure was the main reason for poor supply and engineers were working on a solution. Water tankers made available by the municipal corporation reach the location within an hour or two. These days however, the water supply has shrunk and Sector 21-B is most affected.”

The councillor said she was working on a permanent solution and will try her best to provide her constituents with sufficient water supply at the earliest. Pardeep Kumar Gupta, senior vice-president of the sector Bright resident welfare association (RWA), said: “In a meeting with the municipal commissioner we brought the issue to light but no long-term solution was made available..”
Many times, they had to book private tankers. Residents demand installation of booster pumps to tackle the problem but there has been no official response to that.
Alpana Gupta, a 60-yearold resident of Sector 21, has to call someone to lift buckets of water to her house on the first floor. Residents made complaint even last year but this year, even drinking water is scarce.
Anita Gupta of Sector 21 said: “Earlier we received water at high pressure for two hours daily, at 4am or 5am, which was sufficient. But now, it is insufficient even for the ground-floor residents.”
