CHANDIGARH: Alleging corporal punishment by a school teacher, a parent of class I gave a written complaint to principal of a private School in sector 45 Chandigarh. Copy of the complaint is with TOI. The parent also met the principal in the morning hours on Tuesday. School’s headmaster Louis Lopez said that the parent had met him, and the school has acted on the complaint.
The complaint has been given by Mohammad Sartaj Khan, an advocate working as AM(LEGAL), Real Estate Regulatory Authority Punjab.
In the complaint he stated that on Monday his daughter, a student of class 1, was “brutally beaten” by her class teacher. “She was slapped thrice on her face, and her nose was pulled so badly that scars are still there,” he said. He further alleged that as a result of this torture, she could have turned deaf.
He said that that it is not for the first time. “Instances of slapping and beating children in your school have been happening in the recent past too. The little child is in great trauma and does not want to return to the school again,” he stated in the complaint.
He mentioned in the complaint that “Your staff teacher has violated Article 39 (f) of the Constitution of India and section 17 of the RTE Act, by giving physical punishment and mental harassment to my child.”
It was further written that “this is a fit case for registering an FIR under section 75 of the Juvenile Justice Act".
The parent said, "We had been ignoring the earlier instances because to an extent we are fine because as parents even scold the children. However, on Monday she was very scared as she was beaten up brutally and was asked to not tell the parents which shocked us. We do not want any suspension or strict action by the school but they must issue a warning to the teacher so that no other child has to go through the same trauma."
Headmaster Lopez told TOI, “The parent met me this morning and based on the complaint we found out the truth and gave a written warning to the teacher.”
It was shared that the teacher was a year and a half old in the school and was in the process of confirmation and this complaint might affect the same. Confirming same the headmaster said, “We will not compromise with the school’s standards. Corporal punishment is a strict no in the school and the teacher has been asked to not repeat the same.”
