CHANDIGARG: Passengers travelling on the Haryana Roadways buses are likely to face inconvenience as the employees of the state carrier have announced to go on strike from Wednesday. The Haryana Roadways workers’ union has accused the state government of ignoring their demand of withdrawing private buses from their routes.
Meanwhile, the state government has invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) on the state transport department as the roadways employees’ union leaders started their protests on Tuesday.

The chakka jam stir would lead to suspension of services of around 4,100 buses running on 3,800 routes across Haryana and nine other states, including the Chandigarh-New Delhi Volvo bus service.
The state government is trying to persuade the cooperative societies plying on 950 routes to continue their service. Haryana’s transport minister Krishan Lal Panwar said measures had been put in place to ensure law and order in the state.
“This strike is totally unjustified. The government has already accepted 33 demands of the roadways employees. So far as the allegation of privatization of bus services is concerned, we have just procured buses from private operators. These buses are maintained and run by department under the supervision of general managers,” said Panwar.
“As of now we have been able to cater to the needs of only 13 lakh passengers. We need at least 10,000 more buses. We don’t have enough resources to get buses in one go hence we experimented with the system of hiring private vehicles. We have been forced to be strict as it relates to general public,” the minister said.

Main leaders of HR employees union Dalbir Kirmara and Sarbat Singh Punia had gone elusive since Tuesday morning while some of the district leaders alleged unannounced police action on their colleagues. Heavy deployment of police has been made around the HR workshops and advance booking for buses was stopped from Tuesday evening.
While transport workers have announced ‘chakka jam,’ the multipurpose health workers (MPHW) too have announced their stir from Wednesday. Keeping in view the protests, Haryana health minister Anil Vij indicated registration of cases against those resorting to strike in the violation of ESMA. The state government had invoked ESMA last week in view of the proposed strike by the MPHW.
