CHANDIGARH: "I cannot explain what dance means for me. It's not that easy. It's in the spirit. It's all within. It's like I have a story in my head and I translate it into movements while I breathe with the music," says Claire Le Michel, a contemporary dancer, choreographer and singer, who performs live, un-improvised music.
In Chandigarh for a gig along with her Indo-French band called 'Karanatriix', this group of five artists will perform contemporary Indo-French music and dance.
Their visit has been helmed by Alliance Francaise.
The band, which was originally formed in Chennai in 2003 by the three founding members namely John Anthony (guitarist/ composer), Rahul CR (bassist and sound engineer) and Akhil Jaya Chand (vocalist), does not like to restrict itself to a single genre, but rather creates multi-genre compositions invading through jazz, contemporary, rock among others.
"We have been creating our own music for long and have taken inspiration from various elements. I met Claire back in Trivandrum in 2017 and have been working together ever since," said John.
Claire and John shared thoughts about improvisations on music and dance and decided to create something unique where Claire danced to John's guitar.
Their performance which will be 55 minutes long is a confluence of both the cultures (Indian and French) through music and dance. The musical compositions are a blend of the Oriental and the West.
The design of the stage and the lights is managed by Sylvain Dufour.
The group performed over four compositions namely Angel Dust, Exorcism, Untitled and Shivtandavam. "Angels are our guides and they tell us what to do. Exorcism talks about the problems faced by women. At the same time, Untitled' is a prelude that bleeds into a French jazz song followed by Shivtandavam," added Anthony.
Talking about dance, Claire said that she has always been a contemporary dancer and it's all about being in the present for her. "I just do it while always being in energy with it," she added.
The group performed at Panjab University's Law Auditorium.
