Justice Ravi Shankar Jha new chief justice of Punjab & Haryana HC

The Supreme Court (SC) collegium has recommended the name of Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, presently serving as acting chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh high court, as the new chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court.

CHANDIGARH: The Supreme Court (SC) collegium has recommended the name of Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, presently serving as acting chief justice of the Madhya Pradesh high court, as the new chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court. Justice Jha been appointed in place of Justice Krishna Murari who has been elevated as a Supreme Court Judge.
“Having regard to all relevant factors, the collegium is of the considered view that Justice Ravi Shankar Jha is suitable in all respects for being appointed as the chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court.
While recommending the name of Justice Ravi Shankar Jha, the collegium is well conscious of his position in the seniority of judges hailing from the Madhya Pradesh high court,” observed the Supreme Court collegium while recommending Justice Jha’s name.
The 58-year-old Justice Ravi Shankar Jha had enrolled as a lawyer in September 1986. Before his elevation as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh high court, he had practiced on civil, revenue constitutional sides in the MP high court at Jabalpur.
He was appointed as a permanent judge of the MP high court on February 2, 2007 and on June 10, 2019, he was appointed the acting chief justice of the MP high court.
The SC Collegium has recommended elevation of Justice Krishna Murari, present chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana high court, as a Supreme Court Judge. Justice Murari was appointed as a judge of the Allahabad high court on January 7, 2004 and was elevated as the chief justice of Punjab and Haryana high court on June 2, 2018.
Former HC judge is Chief Justice of Gauhati HC
Justice Ajai Lamba, a former judge of the Punjab and Haryana high court, has been appointed the new chief justice of the Gauhati high court by the SC collegium. A native of Hisar district in Haryana, Justice Lamba was elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana high court on March 22, 2006. He was shifted to Allahabad high court in December 2011. Justice Lamba had also served as public prosecutor in UT Chandigarh and had practiced as lawyer in the Punjab and Haryana high court before his elevation as the high court judge in 2006.
