CHANDIGARH: The theft accused who had escaped from police lockup in Manimajra in the early hours of Friday was arrested from Delhi on Saturday.
Cops caught Mohammad Salim from near the Red Fort and brought him back to the city. Police teams had been dispatched to Punjab, Haryana and Delhi to catch him.
Mohammad Salim, who belongs to Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, was brought on production warrant from Burail jail for two days for investigation in the theft case in which five mobile phones were stolen from a house in Manimajra on June 25.
The accused was lodged in Burail jail since April.
Police said sentry Sukhpal Singh failed to bolt the lockup in which Salim was confined. He slipped away around 2.30 am. When other cops reported for duty, they found the accused missing and informed the station house officer. Sukhpal and Salim were booked under Sections 223 (escape from confinement or custody negligently suffered by public servant) and 224 (resistance or obstruction by a person to his lawful apprehension) of the IPC.
