The MC has inspected 15 liquor vends located in different parts of city
CHANDIGARH: After the coaching centres, now liquor vends are on the radar of the fire and emergency services department of the Chandigarh municipal corporation, as the department has kicked-off an inspection drive of the liquor vends of the city.
After the information of violations of fire norms were received, the MC decided to inspect liquor vends in the city. "We have inspected around 15 liquor vends located in different parts of the city.
Several irregularities were found in almost all these vends. We have allotted a specific time period to these vends to install the fire equipment and fulfil the laid down parameters, failing which strict action will be taken against them, which can lead to sealing of the building," said an official of the MC.
Sources in the civic body revealed that majority of the liquor vends have a tavern inside the buildings located in congested places thus posing serious threat to the visitors.
"During the inspection we have found that neither these taverns have proper entry and exit point nor they have fire extinguishers and any other arrangement to deal with fire incidents. Moreover, these taverns have kitchens which increases the risk. Thus, we have asked them to comply with the laid down norms," sources added.
Sources in the department revealed that since they have decided to inspect all the public, commercial, government and other buildings of the city to check whether or not they are complying with the fire safety norms.
The department after inspecting coaching centres and liquor vends, will inspect more buildings in near future.
MC inspects 250 coaching centres
The fire and emergency services department of the MC has inspected around 250 coaching centres in the city and found anomalies in almost all the centres. "We have issued over 150 notices to coaching centres and process to issue notices to the remaining centres will continue. Since the UT's estate office has also been inspecting the buildings and thus if these coaching centres failed to comply with the norms in the stipulated period, strict action will be taken against them," an official said.
