CHANDIGARH: Taking cognizance of
rampant violations of instructions and guidelines concerning
Covid-19,
Punjab government on Friday enhanced the amount of penalties imposed on violators. Non-payment of fine by the violator will attract legal action under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The decision was taken by Punjab health minister Balbir Singh Sidhu during a review meeting of the
health department.
Sidhu pointed out that amount of penalties was enhanced to keep people safe from the virus. He said that Rs 500 penalty will be imposed for not wearing a mask in public places while Rs 2,000 for violating the home quarantine instructions. Those found spitting in public places will have to pay fine of Rs 500 while violating social distancing norms by owners of shops/commercial outlets will attract fine of Rs 2,000.
The health minister further said that not below the post of BDPO, Naib Tehsildar and any official authorized by Deputy Commissioners can impose the penalties under the provisions of Epidemic Disease Act, 1897. He said that non-payment of fine by the violator will attract legal action under section 188 IPC as per regulations framed under the Epidemic Disease Act, 1897.
