Chandigarh: The
Punjab government has prepared a comprehensive plan for the upgradation of infrastructure in government-run
schools.
To overcome the shortage of classrooms in government schools, Punjab government has earmarked a budget of over Rs 800 crore. The government plans to construct 10,976 classrooms across the state. Of which, 10,342 classrooms would be constructed in pre-primary and primary schools at an estimated cost of Rs 776 crore, while 273 classrooms would be built in middle schools, 244 and 117 in secondary and senior secondary schools, respectively.
Earlier this year, the government had declared 3,488 classrooms in 1,446 schools as unsafe.
Harjit Singh Saini, general secretary of Punjab State Elementary Teachers Association, said that a large number of schools, especially primary schools, were functioning from buildings which have been declared unsafe by government.
