CHANDIGARH: Schools in Chandigarh, Panchkula and Mohali have given a homework assignment to students asking them to write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, thanking him for stripping the state of Jammu and Kashmir of its special status by amending the Article 370.
In one such case, a woman from Panchkula posted a screenshot of her 11-year-old brother’s homework assignment from his school on her Twitter handle, calling the assignment a “propaganda”.
The assignment, given to Class 6 students, read: “All students have to write a letter in Hindi, to PM of India, thanking PM for removing Article 370 in J&K.”
The tweet of the woman went viral on the micro-blogging website garnering thousands of retweets and replies that ranged from appreciating the school for giving the assignment to questioning them of being insensitive to 11-year-olds.
“Class 6 students don’t need to be used for politics of the pro-government schools of our country,” wrote one user. Another user wrote: “We were made to write essays on Nehru and Gandhi on their birthdays. This propaganda has been going on since ages.”
When TOI reached out to a Panchkula school, its principal first denied having given such a homework to the children. “We have not given any such homework. Maybe it was discussed in the class because of some teacher’s wild imagination,” she said.
Later, the activity coordinator of the school confirmed that such homework was indeed given to the Class 6 students, “but not by their school”. “Our school is part of a chain of renowned schools. The homework assignment had come from the top to all schools. So our school also had to forward it to the students,” she said.
A principal of another school, which is part of the chain, confirmed that such assignment had come from the top. “We had no role to play in it. It was forwarded as instructed,” she said.
On being asked if any parents have complained to the school for giving such a homework, she claimed that no complaint has been received so far.
