CHANDIGARH: The UT administration has sought a report on solid waste management and door-to-door garbage collection system from the Chandigarh municipal corporation.
The move comes after the UT administrator V P Singh Badnore said that solid waste management is still a challenge before the administration.
In his Independence Day speech, Badnore had said, “Garbage segregation and management still remains one of the challenges faced by the City Beautiful and I would like to solicit support and cooperation of each and every citizen so that we can achieve the task of 100% garbage segregation at source.”
A senior MC official said that they are already in the process of effectively implementing solid waste management bylaws and Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Rules-2016 in the city and will soon submit the report to the administration.

Meanwhile, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Punjab and Haryana high court is also keeping an eye on the solid waste management in the city. Besides, the Chandigarh MC have also started door-to-door garbage collection system in villages, which were recently merged with the civic body.
Recently, 13 UT villages were merged with the municipal corporation. The MC is now handling the solid waste management of these recently merged villages as well.

The MC had decided to segregate garbage at source on its own as the Supreme Court had issued directions to implement the Municipal Solid Waste Rules-2016. Besides, the NGT is also monitoring the solid waste management cases.
Segregation of garbage at source is one of the key factors of Municipal Solid Waste Rules-2016 and the MC has to implement the directions of the court.
Last year, the garbage collection and segregation of waste was majorly hit in Chandigarh after the strike by garbage collectors. The segregation of waste into wet, dry and hazardous waste is mandatory at household level under the MSW rules 2016, which have been recently adopted by Chandigarh administration through a separate notification.
But now, the garbage collectors have agreed to help civic body in segregation of waste. The other modalities of memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the MC and the garbage collectors will be finalised by a panel, which was formed by the MC commissioner K K Yadav.
