Police scan for clues at the house of the victim at Sector 38 on Tuesday.
CHANDIGARH: A 62-year-old woman and her servant were attacked with a hammer in their house at Sector 38 D on Tuesday morning.
Neelam Pal Singh, whose husband Mohinder Pal Singh had been a former Congress MLA in Himachal Pradesh and died two years back, was admitted to the trauma centre of PGI. Her condition is stated to be critical.
In his statement to police, Parkash Bahadur, the servant, said the accused Neeta, a resident of Sector 23, runs Sunil Light House and was an acquaintance of Neelam.
He came to the house in the morning and told her he had met with an accident near Shahpur light point in Sector 38 and left his scooter there. Neelam asked Bahadur, a resident of Dhanas, to bring his scooter. Bahadur, however, could not find the two-wheeler. When he returned, he heard the cries of Neelam and found Neeta hitting her with a hammer on her head. When he tried to stop him, Neeta attacked him too.
Police said Neelam had lent some money to the accused and was asking him to return the amount for last few months. As her condition was serious, she could not give her statement. The exact reason behind the attack would be known only after her statement is recorded, police said.
Bharat, Neelam's nephew, said she was living alone in the house since her husband died. She doesn't have any children. Her husband was a senior Congress leader and had fought the election of legislative assembly on Congress ticket from Himachal Pradesh, Bharat said.
DSP Pawan Kumar said police control room received information that two persons were attacked and injured in house number 3463 around 8.15 am. A PCR vehicle rushed to the spot but both had already been taken to Government Multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16, by the woman's brother in his vehicle. She was later referred to PGI.
Police booked Neeta under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) of the IPC. Raids are on to arrest the accused, cops said.
