CHENNAI: A rowdy and six of his friends, fearing a complaint would be lodged against them in a previous incident, attacked villagers at Govindavadi in Kancheepuram district on Tuesday, leaving one person dead and 10 others, including five of a family, injured.
All the seven were drunk and had also smoked ganja, said police, adding that they had detained two for questioning and were hunting for the others.
The deceased man was identified as 60-year-old Dhananjchezhian.
The incident occurred around noon, a police officer said, when Purushothaman, who had a criminal record, and the others were drinking and smoking ganja at his house. One of them said he had overheard through a friend that a man named Murali, who Purushothaman had assaulted the previous day, planned to lodge a complaint with police.
Incensed, the rowdy and his friends pulled out swords and machetes and ran towards Murali’s residence.
On the way, some villagers tried to stop them but the gang members brandished their weapons and most of them ran away. However, Sanjeevarayan, 65, and his younger brother Dhananjchezhian, 60, stayed put at the spot and offered some resistance. A few others joined them.
The gang then turned its ire towards Sanjeevarayan and Dhananjchezhian, who had earlier lodged a complaint against Purushothaman for an attack and later withdrew the complaint.

The elderly siblings blocked their path, but the gang members attacked them with the weapons.
Hearing their cries, Sanjeevarayan’s family members Devaki, Subhashini, Radha, Viswanathan and Murthy ran to the spot and tried to pull the elderly duo to safety but were attacked themselves and suffered grevious injuries. Soon, other villagers gathered at the spot and Purushothaman and his friends escaped from the spot.
The villagers took the injured people to the government hospital in Chengalpet where the doctors declared Dhananjchezhian dead on arrival.
Sanjeevarayan and the others are recovering at the hospital and their condition is stable, doctors said.
Later, a police team went to the spot, conducted an inspection and made inquiries with some of the witnesses and others.
Police said Purushothaman had been involved in a case of murder, three attempt to murder cases, and two cases of criminal assault.
Kancheepuram superintendent of police D Kannan said that they had managed to get some vital clues from the scene of attack. “We hope to crack the case soon by apprehending all the seven suspects,” he added.
