All-women police stations in Chennai to get play areas, crèches soon

Making way for a more inclusive workspace that can ease the burden of young parents, the city police have started building two play areas at the two allwomen police stations in MKB Nagar and St Thomas Mount and a creche is being constructed at another of the police station in the city

CHENNAI: Making way for a more inclusive workspace that can ease the burden of young parents, the city police have started building two play areas at the two allwomen police stations in MKB Nagar and St Thomas Mount and a creche is being constructed at another of the police station in the city, said Chennai city police commissioner A K Viswanathan.
In due course, play areas and creches will be created in all the all-women police stations.
The facility is not only for the the women police personnel, but also for petitioners who are accompanied by their children.
Viswanathan was speaking at a one-day programme on women empowerment at the Chennai city police commissioner’s office on Saturday. The agenda of the programme was to enhance people skills of women personnel who could approach people coming with grievances.
‘Orator’ Sugi Sivam was brought in to give tips to develop talking styles of the personnel. At least 200 women police personnel, apart from the additional commissioner of police Maheshkumar Agarwal, joint commissioners of police Najmal Hoda, T S Anbu, M V Jaya Gowri, and deputy commissioners of police participated at the event.
Viswanathan said: “We have to take a vow to give special priority to assist and help the aggrieved people knocking at our doors. They all believe that the allwomen police personnel would help and make a difference to their lives. All we have to do is to sit and talk to them calmly and understanding their problems, giving right kind of solutions, acceptable to the aggrieved people.”
He said, “In the year 2018, we took a ‘Third-Eye’ campaign, which was appreciated by the public. Likewise, we should take a promise to give priority to assist women and children in this year and we should focus on it.”

Adding that the officer said that the city police recommendations to the state government has helped in creating a new unit called ‘Crime Against Women and Children’ focussing importance to the specific cases pertaining to women and children.
Chennai city police get a new deputy commissioner of police and roping in all the all women police stations under the DCP, while the state police has a top officer in the rank of an additional director-general of police to look after all the crimes against women and children in the state.
