CHENNAI: More than 8,000 hotels and restaurants in Chennai will soon manage waste on their own as the Greater Chennai Corporation has agreed to allot them land for the purpose.
Either one plot of land or small plots in five different locations to the tune of 10 acres will be allotted where the hotels have to join and set up a composting facility.
In the meantime, they can send waste to the micro composting centres located at ward levels and smaller composting facilities that have been set up in parks, playgrounds and other open lands.

The civic body has been collecting and transporting waste till now. Now it will be done by the hotel owners themselves.
President of the Tamil Nadu Hotel Association M Venkada Subbu told TOI, “We have started looking for consultants and other private operators who can manage our waste. We are also looking at various options to transport the waste to these composting facilities set up by the civic body.”
As per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, hotels, gated communities and apartment complexes with more than 20 units generating at least 100 kg of waste a day are responsible for managing waste on their own.

“We understand that maintaining the city’s cleanliness and sanitation is our responsibility. We shall do it. We will segregate the waste and send the wet waste to these facilities,” said Subbu.
Currently, there are about 8,000 hotels registered with the association in Chennai and about one lakh of them are small hotels and vendors. Out of the total 5,500 MT of waste generated every day, about 5% comes from hotels.
Corporation commissioner G Prakash said the civic body would map the locations of the composting facilities and hand over the details to the hotel association.
“We will upload the details online so that each hotel and transport the waste within 2-5km distance. Also, we will help them tie up with NGOs and other third parties who can manage and dispose of waste scientifically,” he said.
