CHENNAI: To explore the history behind western classical music in Chennai, and in celebration of Madras Week, the
Madras Musical Association, a formal collective of musicians that performed choral music over 125 years ago, will present a concert on Sunday, August 25, at 4pm.
The concert, being organized by
Madras Inherited, will take place at Higginbothams,
LIC Building.
“The idea was to bring the music out of the formal space of a concert hall, and use music as a medium to recognize spaces that may otherwise be left unseen and therefore, not tended to,” says
Shalini Ravikumar, head of operations.
Madras Inherited. “It's an attempt to bring this type of music outside of the
concert hall and make it accessible to all, and also create awareness about the different aspects of heritage in our city. We hope this will cause a ripple effect of sorts and other (often abandoned) heritage venues in our city will be brought back to life and opened out for more such cultural activities.”
In this case, says Ravikumar, bringing western classical music out of the formal venue of a concert hall makes it more available to a larger audience who may not be aware of it or have access to it. The last date to register for the concert is Saturday, August 24.
