VILLUPURAM: A 63-year-old pillion rider died after falling down from a two-wheeler when the rider, her son, attempted to evade
vehicle check at Kallakurichi in Villupuram on Sunday.
A senior police officer said a team of Kallakurichi police headed by trainee sub-inspector Velmurugan was conducting vehicle checks near the Government SC/ST Girls Hostel in the town on Sunday.
The team had caught 17 cases of
traffic violation including lack of using helmets till 2pm. At 2.30pm, Senthil Kumar, 29, and his mother Ayyammal, of Ulagangathan Kaatukottai, were heading towards Kallakurichi on a two-wheeler. Senthil Kumar was drunk and riding the two-wheeler without wearing a helmet, police said. He started speeding on seeing the vehicle inspection team to evade check.
"Constable Santhosh, who was part of the team, tried to stop the vehicle, but his hand touched Ayyammal accidentally, pushing her off the vehicle," a police officer said. She sustained severe injuries to the head and was declared brought dead at the Kallakurchi Government hospital.
Blaming Santhosh for Ayyammal's death, more than 50 people including relatives and villagers resorted to a protest outside the hospital. All five personnel who were part of the vehicle check-up team were shifted to Villupuram armed reserve wing later in the day.
