CHENNAI: Around 80 members of the Congress party were detained here on Thursday when they tried to take out a rally from the party state headquarters to condemn the arrest of former Union minister P Chidambaram.
The CBI arrested Chidambaram from his house in Delhi on Wednesday night in connection with the INX Media case.
Senior Congress leader Gopana led the protest in the absence of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K S Alagiri who had left for Delhi.

Gopana said Chidambaram’s name was not in the case filed in 2007. The investigating agency is yet to file a chargesheet in the case. Yet, the agency had arrested the former Union minister, he said.
Terming it a “political vendetta,” he recollected Amit Shah’s arrest in connection with the Gujarat riot when Chidambaram was the Union home minister. “Shah was arrested based on evidence that proved his involvement in the riot,” he said and added in retaliation to that, the Modi government had misused the central agency to arrest Chidambaram.
The party held a state-wide demonstration condemning what it called the BJP government’s “high handedness” and “misuse of the central agencies.”
