A group of migrant workers walking from Chennai to Odisha to reach their home state amidst the ongoing nationwide lockdown against Covid-19.
Amid prevalent chaos and uncertainty over access to the essential services and commodities during the lockdown, we bring you the latest updates from your city.
*Update at 9.53pm: After a week's hiatus, sale of alcoholic beverages resumed in non-containment zones of Tamil Nadu on Saturday amid police security, except in the state capital Chennai and neighbouring Tiruvallur.(PTI)
*Update at 9.52pm: As many as 69 Covid-19 patients have been discharged from Chennai's Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College in four days after they recovered with the help of Western and Siddha medicines.(ANI)
*Update at 8.37pm: The Special Investment Promotion Task Force set up by the Tamil Nadu government to woo overseas investors met on Saturday and discussed ways and means to attract investments from companies planning to relocate to India following the impact on the global economy caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

: A 53-year-old diabetologist S Manoharan who hails from Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu and runs his own hospital at Chavara about 80 km from the state capital Chennai, is in the news for extending a helping hand to the vulnerable sections of the society. He, along with his friend, has paid the insurance premium for around 1,172 people. (IANS)
*Update at 4.57: The Tamil Nadu government will distribute transparent masks for hearing and speech impaired persons, their parents, trainers, teachers and others to help them communicate by reading lips.(IANS)
*Update at 4.23pm: Tamil Nadu plans to send 10,000 migrant workers a day to their home states and has requested them to stay at the camps till arrangements are made. (IANS)
*Update at 3.00pm: A biryani shop in Trichy has come up with an idea to boost its business in a way that will also help contain the spread of coronavirus infection. The eatery will give free hand sanitizers to customers who order food for more than Rs 1,000, gloves to those who order for Rs 600 and masks for those who order food for minimum Rs 300.

*Update at 1.45pm: Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami requests guest workers to stay in the relief camps and stop walking to other states. The state has sent 55,473 workers by train so far and plan to send 10,000 workers daily with consent of respective states.
*Update at 12.00pm: Tamil Nadu government announces Rs 2,000 cash support to non-members of TN hairdressers' welfare board. The members of the board already received Rs 2,000 in two installments.

*Update at 8.45am:

*The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the state government to resume sale of liquor through Tasmac outlets from Saturday by staying a May 8 order of the Madras high court that had closed these outlets due to violation of conditions imposed by it.
*Tamil Nadu’s Covid-19 count topped the 10,000 mark on Friday with 434 people testing positive, 309 of them in Chennai. The state’s death toll rose to 71, with five more fatalities.
*Several central districts have ramped up their institutional quarantine facilities after the state government indicated its intention to divert some of the Chennai-bound international flights carrying stranded Indians to Trichy from next week.
*Ten Tamil Nadu Special Police (TSP) constables tested positive and admitted at Omandurar Government Hospital on Friday. Apart from them, a city intelligence wing sub-inspector of police, a woman sub-inspector and two women police personnel also tested positive of coronavirus.
Chennai’s neighbours saw double-digit increases in infections — Tiruvallur reported 21 cases, Chengalpet 20 and Kancheepuram 11 — while nine other districts reported single-digit increases.
