CHENNAI: A drunk 20-year-old college student in a speeding sedan crashed into a line of parked autorickshaws on the pavement on Dr
Radhakrishnan Salai near
Royapettah early on Sunday, killing one auto driver and leaving five others injured.
The Adyar traffic police arrested K Naveeth Ahmed, who was driving the car at high speed when the accident occurred, and four of his friends who were in the vehicle.
They were heading to a party.
"
Rajesh, 35, a native of Arakkonam, who was sleeping in one of the autorickshaws, died on the spot," an investigating officer, adding that Naveeth and one of his friends, N Harikrishnan, 21, tested positive for alcohol.
The accident was disconcertingly similar to another crash 14 months earlier, when racer Vikas Vijayanand, 22, at the wheel of a Porsche, hit several parked autorickshaws at the same spot on September 19, 2016, leaving one driver dead and injuring six. "Naveeth and Harikrishnan and the three others arrested, R Kiran Kumar, 19, R Vishal Rajkumar, 19, and P Vinoth, 20, are students from across the city," the officer said.
