MADURAI: As directed by the Madras high court, eight students from a college in Aruppukkottai cleaned Kamaraj Memorial House in Virudhunagar on Thursday as a reformative punishment for attending classes under the influence of liquor.
The students came to the memorial in the morning and began to clean the premises from 8am. They helped the visitors to the memorial. From 4pm to 6pm, the students conducted an anti-liquor campaign outside their memorial, holding placards highlighting the dangers of liquor.

The eight students are studying second year BSc computer science at Devanga Arts College in Aruppukkottai . In January, they participated in their friend's birthday party and later attended classes under the influence of alcohol. When the college authorities found that the students were drunk, they told them that TCs would be given to them.
Following the decision of the college management, the students moved the HC seeking to continue their studies in the college.
On Tuesday, Justice R Suresh Kumar directed them to clean the memorial on the occasion of Independence Day. The judge directed that if the students completed the above excise, the college management should permit these students to continue the course in the college.
As directed by the court, Virudhunagar Town inspector Priya and college faculty member Saravanan supervised the students’ work on Thursday.
The report of their activities would be submitted to the college management on Friday, which would then allow them to attend the classes. The report would be submitted in court when the case comes up for next hearing on August 19.
