CHENNAI: A four-member gang hacked to death a 28-year-old man at Singaperumal Koil in Kancheepuram district on Thursday allegedly over previous enmity.
On Thursday night, four people came on two motorcycles and intercepted Surya, a resident of Mettu Street. He was an accused in an attempt to murder case in Maraimalai Nagar police station limits. Surya was on his bike when the gang surrounded him, brandishing machetes in public.
Seeing them, Surya attempted to flee, but the gang chased and attacked him with the deadly weapons. He died on the spot. They escaped leaving him in a pool of blood. Passers-by who noticed Surya’s body informed the Chengalpet police. Police suspect that the attack could have been a fallout of previous enmity. On Monday, Surya had reportedly picked a fight with his friends and had attacked a man leaving him badly injured.
However, they did not lodge any police complaint. As Surya’s friends were absconding since Thursday night following his death, the needle of suspicion fell on them. Police examined CCTV camera footage from the scene of crime and found two of the culprits masked. They sent Surya’s body for post-mortem examination and said they have traced the bikes on which the suspects came. Two special teams have been formed to trace them.
