CHENNAI: The Madras high court has ordered the demolition of a temple encroaching on the Paper Mills Road in Perambur right opposite Venus Mall. A division bench of Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Bhavani Subbaroyan issued the interim directions after a survey ordered by the court identified such encroachments across the entire length of the road.
After the authorities informed the court that though a notice had been already issued to the persons managing Thandumariamman temple, no one responded to it so far, the bench directed the Chennai Corporation to issue a fresh notice instructing the trust or persons managing the temple to remove the idol and demolish the structure on their own.

If they fail to comply with it, the corporation shall take appropriate steps to demolish the temple, the court added. The bench then posted the plea to August 29 for further hearing. The issue pertains to contempt plea moved by L T William Moses seeking action against the local administration authorities for failing to obey court order and remove encroachments along the road.
In a recent hearing, the bench directed the corporation to do a full-fledged survey of encroachments on Paper Mills Road. It also flayed officials for coming up with unsatisfactory data on the matter.
The court also said that it would monitor the developments.
As directed by the court, the Chennai collector as well as the regional deputy commissioner filed reports stating that as per the preliminary survey, there could be encroachments up to 1m on both sides of the road.
Recording the submissions, the bench observed that residents living in the area for eight to 10 decades had confirmed that the road width has shrunk considerably. Therefore, we cannot believe the stand taken by revenue officials that there can be no encroachment, when the status report of the district collector and the additional report of the regional deputy commissioner (central), Greater Chennai Corporation, state that there can be encroachment up to 1m.
