CHENNAI: A second year MTech student stabbed his classmate on the IIT-M campus on Wednesday evening over a petty quarrel, police said. While the victim, 24-year-old Pramod Kaushik from Haryana, is recovering in a private hospital, police nabbed his assailant, Manoj, 24, also from Haryana, after a chase. He was taken to the Kotturpuram police station for questioning.

The incident occurred around 5.40pm after Kaushik confronted Manoj in front of the institute library and began berating him about his relationship with a girl student, a senior police officer said after preliminary inquiries. As the argument intensified, Manoj stabbed Kaushik in the stomach with a sharp knife and escaped. As Kaushik slumped to the ground, bleeding profusely, a student named Subam and a few others rushed to his side. They alerted the institute authorities who called police. The injured student was taken in a car to a hospital in Adyar where, according to police, his condition is not critical.
Meanwhile, a team of the Kotturpuram police went to the institute and found that Manoj had disappeared from his hostel. A search was launched and he was found while trying to leave the campus. A case was registered under section 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code.
